Q+Law SFVC referral information

Q+Law provides a free state-wide safe entry point to accessing legal assistance for all individuals who identify as part of LGBTIQA+ communities.

Individuals identifying as LGBTIQA+ can contact Q+Law for initial advice, information or referral. Q+Law services are available over the phone, online or in person.

Type of assistance provided:

For clients

  • Q+Law provides ongoing legal assistance and representation, assessed on a case-by-case basis. They prioritise assistance according to their expertise, community demand and urgency.
  • They assist with: discrimination, harassment and/or violence on the basis of LGBTIQA+ identity and issues affecting trans and gender-diverse people (such as name change or access to services) family violence, family law, employment law, tenancy law, criminal law, police complaints, debt and infringements.
  • Q+Law cannot assist with migration law.
  • If your enquiry falls outside the scope of their service, Q+ Law will endeavour to provide you with a referral to a safe and specialist service that can meet your legal needs.

For other legal staff

  • Free community legal education for community members and community service providers.
  • Secondary consults for community service providers.
  • Support for community movements aimed at reducing systemic LGBTQIA+ discrimination.

Key eligibility criteria:

  • Client lives in Victoria
  • Is LGBTQIA+ or their legal problem affects a LGBTQIA+ family member.

Check eligibility criteria. Obtain client’s informed consent for referral. Confirm that the client:

  • Lives in Victoria
  • Is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community
Making an effective referral

Referrals can be made by:

  • Completing an intake referral form and email to the admin email address. The referral form can be obtained by emailing
  • Warm referral by email (Duty Lawyer’s Only)
  • Provide client with Q+Law details to make direct contact
What do I tell my client about this referral?

Interpreting services and other accessibility requirements are available upon request.

We will ask for all of the clients and other parties' previous names in order to perform a conflict check.

What happens after I make the referral?

If the client is referred by intake sheet, Q+Law will attempt to contact the client 3 times and will update the referee with a progress report.

If the client calls our phone number directly and the phone line is busy they will need to leave a voicemail in order to receive a call back.

Appointments normally occur by telephone but arrangements can be made for in-person appointments at safe outreach clinics.
