A graduated licensing system applies from 1 October 2014.

A graduated licensing system applies from 1 October 2014. From this date people who apply for a motorcycle learner permit or licence will need to comply with phase 1 of this new system. In addition to the current restrictions for motorcyclist novices, these riders will have to:

  • ride with their headlights on at all times
  • wear a high visibility vest
  • refrain from using mobile phones (including for music or navigation aid)
  • only ride automatic motorbike, if that is what they were tested on.
